Taxpayer has adult son whom she supports totally. Son has alcohol and drug problems and has no income. Son does have outstanding debts, including back taxes owed to IRS. If taxpayer claims son as dependent, is there any possibility that she could held liable for his outstanding IRS debt?

Agree with Taxmoney. No chance of that.

Although you can confirm whether or not the son has complied with all his filing obligations, so the statute is running on his tax debt. I've had a few of these cases where the statute just runs out eventually (10 years), you can't squeeze blood out of a turnip, after all.

EDIT: I will mention, however, that at least in CA, if a person with a back tax debt shares a bank account with a person who DOES NOT have a tax debt, it is a huge mistake, as the state will lien any account that the debtor is a signor on.
