Tim Doyle's Talk Page
Please feel free to leave me any messages below.
Hi Tim,
We met in 1999 in Dallas. For 10 years I have been writing some occasional articles on useful websites for tax professionals. I plan to write about Tax Almanac in a forthcoming article.
Please email me at will@willyancey.com for a private discussion about Tax Almanac. Let me know how I can reach you.
Will Yancey
Mr. TDoyle,
It looks like you are doing a great job moderating this board. You were born to do this great work.
Thanks!
Fred :-)
thanks
Tim,
Thanks for the welcome message you left on my talk page. It happened within 30 seconds of me getting an account! Did you actually write that welcome message or was their an automatic script to write it when every new register signs up. I'm curious because I am a heavy contributor to a wiki called wikiHow at http://www.wikiHow.org and was wondering how you did that. I know how one can leave template message with the { and } but I wasn't aware that they could be created automatically upon user signup.
Thanks Tim. You guys have made some nice modifications to the wikimedia interface here. I'm impressed. I found the copyright / license terms confusing, but all the other things on the site are straight forward. Best of luck with this. --JackHerrick 16:50, 31 Aug 2005 (CDT)
Yup. We did skin it ourselves. We have done many modification to make it better suited to building a how-to manual. --JackHerrick 18:14, 31 Aug 2005 (CDT)
Anuenue
Hi Tim Thanks for the welcome. I admit I am having a bit of trouble figuring out how to get around but I have a feeling I'll come to love this site. Soon as I figure out this "maze" I'll add some history.
Yep, ya can't beat Hawaii. I was born and raised in Wahiawa, center of Oahu near Schofield Barracks. Wouldn't trade life here for anything!
Your knowledge sounds like just what I need to light a fire under ProSeries and get them to add the features us preparers would like to have. Mahalo, Anuenue (Rainbow)
"Ask & Answer" not working
I wish I had a quick and obvious answer to how to get the Q&A working better. I think my gut reaction is that a Wiki is simply not the best vehicle for interaction; a message board like the Quicken Forums might work better.
The whole idea, though, of a group of well-meaning but not necessarily expert people answering tax questions is problematic. Taxpayers can lose real money or even face audits by following bad advice. A few well-publicized wrong answers and your site's credibility tanks. Maybe answerers should be required to include citations of tax law and/or IRS/state regulations. For example, I've personally only answered 1 question, but I included a link to the relevant California Franchise Tax Board FAQ so people could see I wasn't just making up an answer :-) . - Rlw 11:18, 26 Oct 2005 (CDT)
I am leaving you a message - Mike D.
Tim, thank you for allowing me to become a member!
Tim,
I see you are busy on a Sunday morning, just like me! To reiterate the above topic - thank you! I sincerely appreciate a forum such as this - it is definitely needed in this ever changing world of taxation and accounting processes.
I have attempted to post my intro in the areas you have suggested, I just hope I have not overdone it! It seems I have posted to three different locations - the members will definitely know who Steve Brooks is!
Again, thank you for monitoring, processing, and just taking care of all of us on this website - I realize it can be a daunting task!
Steve Brooks
Questions answered
Hi Tim,
I posted a question regarding bonus depreciation and I am not sure how I know when it would be answered. Could you explain how it works?

Vandalism
Welcome to the wonderful world of wikis. I hope you don't end up having to revert all vandalism all by yourself. It never ends. IMHO, the only way to fight it is to enlist all the good guys to counter all the bad guys. - rlw (Talk) 21:31, 12 December 2005 (CST)

HTML & Wiki markup
Thanks for the reminder about Wiki markup. The thing is, I know HTML so much better, it's what I tend to use. I can never remember what two apostrophes do vs. three apostrophes in wiki markup, and the discussion pages don't allow preview.
Which brings up another suggestion; on a discussion page, above the Reply textarea, add the buttons which appear on normal wiki pages for markup (the ones showing B I Ab earth A, etc). Right now the discussion pages are pretty bare bones compared to ordinary wiki pages. - rlw (Talk) 10:51, 14 December 2005 (CST)
- The formatting buttons would help me for sure. As a former usability guy, I'd venture to say they would help everyone by making formatting options visible and easy. - rlw (Talk) 11:34, 14 December 2005 (CST)

Emails
I suppose that the emails that I am receiving are discussion dialogue in reference to subjects that come up. I average from 10 -20 per day. I really don't want to receive these as I can check discussion pages to follow questions and answers.
Thanks

Sidebar
I was just experimenting to see whether a personal sidebar would work. It didn't. I had the idea from my limited poking around Wikipedia that some of these features were user-customizable. I believe each MediaWiki instance can enable and disable such features individually in the PHP code. But I'm not an expert on this.
My goal was to add "Recent content changes" and "Recent discussion changes" to my sidebar, in case you were wondering. I've created these as links on my user page and was hoping I could sidebar them for my own convenience. --rlw (Talk) 16:36, 21 December 2005 (CST)
Feel free to delete my Sidebar page. I can't do it myself. --rlw (Talk) 16:37, 21 December 2005 (CST)
Tim, I am new. How do I view questions others are posing? Franklin
Thanks for the welcome
Thanks for the welcome. I have done a little browsing of topics and drilled into them. This is an interesting site and it has already been added to my favorites. I look forward to using it more as time goes on.

Discussion topic
I'd kinda like to promote this one: Discussion:Joint bank account, gift tax, and estate tax and see whether any one else jumps in. Thanks! -- rlw (Talk) 18:35, 9 January 2006 (CST)
Spam filter
Hello Tim.
Could you help me with a problem? I posted a reply to the discussion Discussion:Dependent not living with you. I then tried to make some corrections by editing the page. Instead I got the message that the edit was blocked by the spam filter, "probably because you tried to add a link to an external site". The only external link in that discussion was to the IRS site, and the spam filter blocked me even after I removed that link.
Thanks, MEJungman 11:25, 10 January 2006 (CST)
- Thanks for figuring out the problem. My edits went through fine now. — MEJungman 15:19, 10 January 2006 (CST)
Removal of a discussion question
Today I submitted a question. I now realized that the premise behind it was faulty. I assumed a partnership terminated on the death of a 50% partner. But I have researched further and now realize that it only terminates on the sale or exchange of 50% or more of the partnership interests. And under Reg 1.108-1(b) a bequest is not treated as a sale or exchange.
There has been no discussion on my posting and since it is erroneous, I would like it removed. How can this be done?

How do I correct my last name on the user list. I want it to be a capital "T" instead of lower case.

Bad Debt Deduction
Hi Tim, My name is Josefina and I own Taxes Simply Done. I have been preparing taxes for approximately 10 years and have been introduced to Tax Almanac just this past year. This is my first visit and I hope to make more.
My question is simple. I heard a tax preparer state in a discussion group meeting that personal loans given to other people in anticipation of repayment can be deducted 100% as a bad debt when it is not repaid. And the second comment was that items purchased in a "store" and used to hand out in a "convention table" is completely 100% deductible. I have read every book I have on these topics and nothing I read supports this information.
Is the tax preparer correct or is this person twisting the information to get more clients and bigger refunds?
Thanks for you help in this matter and I hope my relationship with Tax Almanac prospers. Josefina at Taxes Simply Done
Thanks for the welcome
Thank you so much - I am not on here frequently, but check in now and again. I actually do have a need that perhaps you can advise me on. Our AICPA committee is going to have 4 vacancies soon. How would you suggest I "solicit" applications?
Lorraine
Messages not posted
I worked up 2 very long responses to Blubby last night and another this morning and none registered after hitting save message. There were no error messages. However, perhaps some kind of time out error occured due to the amount of time it took to write them. It probably took me at least 8 or 9 minutes to write each one, so I suspect that may be the problem. Taxref.

Hi Tim, Thank you for redirecting my question. I have followed your suggestions and entered information about myself and introduced myself.
I greatly appreciate your assistance:-)
Code & Regs
I must compliment you on the presentation of the Code and Regs on this site. It is the easiest of any sites to use. MUCH easier to read and search than www.legalbitstream.com or other free sites. Six Sigma is a good rule. I'm just learning about it. Why not add a six sigma blog relating to management of accounting and tax practices.
General Welcome
Thanks Tim for the welcome email. I will be checking and adding to discussions periodically.

Erased posts
Hi Tim, don't know if you're active today, but it appears that MEJungman for whatever reason (probably not nefarious!) erased two posts on the thread about HUD rental income. They weren't his posts! One was a response from the thread author clarifying what happened, and the second was from me futher answering and seeking more input from others. The history doesn't show what was erased... Thanks, Jeff JR1

Hi Tim:
I know it is quite a lot to ask. But...would not be wonderful if the system could cross reference all members in-put to IRC, Regs, Court Cases,..etc.?

FREDDIE
Hi Tim:
I am a first time user and, unfortunately, it is the last week of tax season. I just put a message up, actually a tax question, and I presume it goes out to everyone and someone who has the background and time will answer it. I intend to really investigate the Tax Almanac after tax season. I believe I submitted the question but am not sure.Italic text

participation
my 2 cents worth... participants should have to provide some basic background to log in and participate. If they want to just view in, that would be just fine. But getting alot of clutter from folks throwing out a question, then not responding. Totally fine to have tax beginners. But most forums require users to register with a name. That is a good idea.

Organizing the site.
Dear Tim,
I'd like to see the site have the discussion forums divided by category, and then searchable within each of those categories separately, to be able to see "just the latest" entries by date, etc. Often I just am looking for one specific subject, and have to weed thru a lot of discussion that doesn't relate.
Rina.
Hi Tim
I'm thinking to get a certification in Quick Books- I think Intuit is offering severals- I lost a brochure in some place, I like the stuff I read in the basics book- And I'm a little tired of doing insurance Which one will be appropriated? Not able to go back to my profile
Hi Tim, I am registered user of Tax Almanac. I am unable to go back to my profile to edit it. I tried all the tabs on the top toolbar, but no answer. Please e-mail me at: inagpurwala@yahoo.com where I went wrong. And thanks for doing a great job moderating TaxAlmanac.

quick link to code
This is the first time I have tried to navigate this site.
Perhaps I missed it, but if it would be possible to have a link to the code section that deals with any discussion questions, it would be helpful. At the least, some way to know what sections are involved so the user could get there through the code section of the website.
This would probably require someone to view all the inquiries coming in; that person would have to have a better memory for the code sections than I do - hence its usefulness.
user information
Thanks Tim.
So you were one of the programmers on the flow through programs. I am impressed. Even though I gripe about program shortcomings occasionally, I respect how difficult it must be to make the continual programming changes to keep up with tax law changes, form changes, etc, etc.
On my user info crusade: I recently got a question on NOL limitations under corporate ownership changes. ON my urging, the poster told that he was a business owner, owned the business with a large NOL. Not a tax professional. Well, this would have been a tremendious omitted data had I responded to the post thinking the poster was a CPA or tax pro. Totally changed my response. So yes, I am trying to force this in. Also, I feel that if I am going to spend some of my valuable time helping someone, they can at least identify themselves.
Is there an alpha list of questions?
chit chat Hawaii
Hi Tim,
I saw the links you put in for the tax department and something else, but I'm not sure what you are referring to as far as the chit chat area. I also added other tax links.
How and where to add Template:GROWTH word to join the group? I am sorry that not so much verse in "High Tech" term!
IshaqInagpurwala 13:07, 24 April 2006 (CDT)
Acronyms
Tim:
I added a bunch of tax acronyms to the page you created. Upon seeing so many entries with the acronym on one line and then the meaning on another line, I *unilaterally* decided to change the format. <G>. I left the "fun" acronyms alone so the difference could be easily seen.
I think it looks better, but I would like to see the meanings justified. (I just couldn't figure out how to do it.)
Obviously, if you think it should revert to the original format for readability or technical reasons *beyond my ken*, then please do so with the knowledge that I will not be personally harmed!

Credentials
Hey Tim, I don't know that there's other credentials worth noting, really. I started out in CPA world and then went to small biz and tax, and many CPA's don't know squat about taxes. So it's a bit unnerving to give them a credential implying something that may not be true. And I've met a ton of EA's around here this year that don't know an S corp fromm an LLC. Just a flinching item for me is all...I passed the accounting parts of the exam and left that world, so didn't finish it up. In Chicago, the ND degree means more than anything else anyway, fortunately, so it's never been a hindrance to getting business. And self designating something like Tax Pro or whatever...well, that's not objective, so who says?
So it's fine, thanks for listening.. Jeff
Solicitations
Tim:
I would like to get your thoughts on the propriety of answering solicitations. Personally, I do not think they should be part of this site. Please see the thread "Tax reporting of foreign owned subsidiary" as an example. (http://www.taxalmanac.org/index.php/Discussion:Tax_reporting_of_foreign_owned_subsidiary)
I do not believe the tax pros on the site should offer their services "publicly". The OP should be asked to provide contact information and then the communication can be done outside of this site.
I would like to know your thoughts or perhaps you may want to throw out the idea to the community.

Hi Tim. The TaxAlmanac site is looking great! I used the design of the DYK section in a meeting today with a web designer to illustrate some functionality I want in the 'next generation' of our website at Impact Productions. Keep up the great work!

Hi Tim,
I am trying to update my "User Page" and not able to. When I access via "Introduce Yourself", I can see what I have posted. But when I hit edit button, which takes me to a box, I do not see any text. Accept I see| BGC | This user is a member of the Business Growth Community. |

there.
One TaxAlmanac user informed me that he cannot see my profile to detrmine who am I, my qualification etc.
I had put my itro (profile) on 02/24/06, but I did not receive any "welcome message" from you. Does that mean my profile is not accessible by other users!
Please let me know how to update my profile, because I want to add more information about myself.
By the way you are doing a great job managing and moderating TaxAlmanac!

Hi Tim,
You have built some very impressive tools on top of mediawiki. I was wondering if these are opensource tools that are available for contribution back to mediawiki.
Also, did you help develop them, or are you more of a tax expert? Must be nice living in Hawaii!
