Knock on wood, Im grateful that I'm doing okay this year, no major complaints as i posted just a few minutes ago on another discussion, im trying not to raise fees and be flexible with getting paid, and trying harder than ever to get new clients

i.e. wait for client to get refund, they can pay me on a payemnt plan, of course this is for trustworthy loyaal good paying clients.

just wondering how you guys and gals are doing so far?

i found a lot of filers early this year because they want their refund due to financial pressures

i hope you are all doing well !!

I've lost a few easy returns to TurboTax (I don't worry, I'll pick the same number up within a year or two at a higher fee to correct the mistakes that the IRS finds in their self-prepared returns).

I also have had some much more complicated returns due to foreclosure, short sales, restructuring of installment sales, etc. This has resulted in increased revenue from these whom I can help the most.

The returns are getting more complex (similar to Kevin's post), and it's getting harder to get paid. Most everyone wants to pay when they get their refund, but we found out last year that they often conveniently forget to do so. Business returns are looking uglier as the economic woes are hitting clients. I try to remain detached, but I still feel bad when I see these. Then there's the stupid factor, where people do stupid things, and you get to deliver the bad news when you do their taxes. That seems to be increasing as well, and we all know that you can't fix stupid.

one thing I would never recommend is to NOT go up on overall fees every year

(but I do make exceptions for people who have lost their job)

I did choose not to raise fees this year. And getting paid from a handful will wait, but they'll pay me. Overall, biz is as good as it's ever been.

Have had a handful of 1040 clients call ahead of time to see if their bill could be lowered. Unfortunately for them, I can't lower their tab for a return that is just as time consuming as last year's. A good corporate client came in early January to tell me he wasn't going to retain our services for this year. His business is hurting (HVAC installer for NEW properties) and he had to fire his sister in-law as his bookkeeper. He got a "package deal" from a H&W to do his accounting and bookkeepping for a much reduced price than us.

I've also have seen the people who usually show up the end of March, coming in February.
