Taxpayer has a home office approximately 15% of the total home. Taxpayer had some major remodeling to the entire house, painting of bedrooms, kitchen remodel and garage roof replacement totaling about $35K. Most of these items were not directly related to the part of the home that is used for the HO. I couldn't really find anything specific on this, but the things I did find talk about direct costs or indirect cost such as a furnace or air conditioner that benefit the entire home. These other costs such as the garage and kitchen, can these type of home remodels be allocated to the HO?

Thank you

I would not. For HO, you could depreciate such improvements as roof, siding, alarm system, etc. But, for improvements done to other parts of the house not related to the HO, is a no go. If that's the case, everyone who has a HO would want to depreciate the new jacuzzi they had installed out back or the kitchen that got remodeled.
