Publications

Truthseeker:

The pages on TaxAlmanac for the publications currently contain an overview as well as links to the html and pdf versions located on the IRS website. We haven't decided if we want to import the actual data or not, as this would take time to do and to keep up to date. For the time being, we're hoping that the pages with links to the pubs will be of value to the TaxAlmanac community. Do you think this is the case? Would you use TaxAlmanac to get to the pubs with this method?

Thanks!

Pubs

We'd love for you to access them here on TaxAlmanac - that's what we're trying to make this site - the place that you go to for all of your tax research needs. If you find we're missing pages for any publications that you need to access, just let me know.

Installment on land

Yes. That's probably the most familiar one, no deprec. recapture to worry over...just paying tax on the principle as received and showing the interest income. Form 6251? or 2? JR1 09:19, 1 November 2006 (CST)

IL efiling

Hey Chet, yep, I'm an IL guy unfortunately! Out in St. Charles/Naperville areas...Haven't even installed PS yet, doing all the W2's and year end payroll crap first...then I'll get to it, so can't help with your question. I wonder if there's a connection to the IRS not accepting some efilings until Feb 3? Jeff

IL efiling

Hey Chet, I have now successfully efiled an IL...nothing special to report. Jeff

Hey

Truthseeker

How to leave a message

I got your question about how to leave a message for another user.

Let me explain the current system, and maybe we can figure out a better way.

  • When a person registers on TaxAlmanac, a "user" page and an associated "user talk" page are created.
  • The user page is in the format "User:Truthseeker" and the user talk page is "User talk:Truthseeker".
  • The user page is where that person tells the world who they are, and the user talk page is where other people can leave them messages (which can be read by anyone, so they're not private).
  • If a person interacts in the discussion forum, their post will have a link to both their user page and their user talk page. Just click on their username to go to their user page to learn about them, or click on the work "talk" to go to their user talk page to leave them a message.
  • If you are looking at a person's user page, you can click on the "discussion" tab at the top to go right to their user talk page, and from their you can click on "user page" to go back.
  • When people leave each other messages on their user talk pages, it is recommended that they sign who they are, and hopefully even add a link so that person can quickly find you and reply back.
  • An easy way to have the system add your signature automatically for you is to type 3 "~" characters. When you save, that will be changed to your name and a link to your user page. You can use 4 "~" characters if you want the date added as well. You can actually do this anywhere on TaxAlmanac.
  • If someone leaves you a message on your user talk page and they forgot to sign it, you can simply click on the history tab at the top of the page and click on their username there.
  • If you want to go to a person's user or user talk page and you don't have a link available to click on, just type their name in the yellow search box in the left column. Note that you have to type it just right - upper/lower case, etc.

I'm not sure how we could make this easier, but I'd be interested in any thoughts you might have. Note that there are over 14,000 registered users, so a list of users would be difficult to navigate.

You also said "is there a quick reference as to how to navigate this system?" I woudl recommend you look at the Main page, and look in the blue section at the top. The two main areas of TaxAlmanac are the content it contains (click on Tax Research Library) and the discussion forums (click on Discussion Forums). There are links below those two for more specific information.

Let me know if you have any more questions or suggestions. I'm here to make things easier, and I would value your input!

IL 1040's

Hey Chet, it's actually not a bug. IL posted a notice right after the first of the year that they wouldn't/couldn't accept efiles with IL withholding on an unemployment statement. At the time, I thought, who cares, I've never ever seen state withholding on those anyway. Until now of course, Have had two already! I did read someone else's suggestion to do what you did, move it to an es instead. . .can't figure why they'd send $60 more back, tho'....that makes no sense.

Illinois Bug?

Chet:

You left me a message regarding a possible defect in the ProSeries Illinois Software. I was out ill and just now got to your message. Has this been resolved? Have you contacted ProSeries support, either by phone on on their forums?

IL Refunds

Copying what you wrote first: It's your tax preparer friend from Illinois (Buffalo Grove, Illinois). My question is related to the way ProSeries handles the State tax refund from the previous year. Example: The client gets a 1099G for $500 (refund received from the state). However, after the transfer by ProSeries of the previous year's state return information, the state refund appears on the 1040 line10 in the amount of $139. How could this be ? The client had itemized deductions on Schedule A of $24,000. I looked at the ProSeries 1099G worksheet, and the amount of the refund Line2 is different from what appeared on the previous year state tax refund. Also, the ProSeries "Federal Carry Forward" worksheet amount is different from the previous year's state tax refund. I have contacted the ProSeries technical support help-desk and they were of very little help. It's been very frustrating interacting with Intuit. I welcome any insight you maybe able to provide.

Chet, the only thing that I've noticed is that if their itemized deducts were limited due to high income or AMT, the amount that was actually used for the previous year is what hits for the current refund. All I ever do is double check to see that the actual refund matched what I had originally, and that the line 10 worksheet matches that, just in case. After that, I've trusted the software, and it's usually one of those two things. Hope that helps.
