using windows on a mac
Hi Keith:
I saw your post about the EA exame materials and I would like to comment on using windows software on the Mac.
I switched to Mac a couple of years ago. I never messed with bootcamp. I use vmware fusion. I run an old copy of windows xp under vmware on both my mac pro and macbook. I have never had a problem running any kind of windows software using this setup.
The current version of vmware fusion is even aware of all of your mac printer settings. So after you install vmware and then install windows you don't have to mess with installing the windows printer drivers. It automatically transfers your mac printer settings. So in windows under vmware when you print you will see your mac printer right there and it just works.
Here is a link to the site:

There is a 30-day free trial.
You do need a valid windows install disk and a valid code. You actually have to install the windows os, just as if you are installing it onto a new windows machine. You will also have to go through all of the software upgrades from microsoft. For example, if I were to do a new install I belive the IE is a few versions old and I would have to upgrade that to the current specs. This is an issue when signing up for the EA test on the prometric site as that site will not work for a safari or firefox user. And I do not want to install IE on the my mac. You also run into this on some websites that only want IE only.
Sorry about going on and on about this, but I have been involved with some other non-tax high end windows-only software and I have found that there is little support for the adventurous mac user that wants to run the software under vmware. For example I have run GIS sofware from esri on the mac http://www.esri.com and I have run high-end satellite imaging sofware under vmware as well ( http://www.erdas.com/Products/tabid/56/Default.aspx ) The instructors that saw me run this on the mac were astounded. My mac even ran the software faster then the high-end dell workstations. Tech support from Esri and Erdas didn't know if the setup would work and would only comment that their software is only for windows only machines, etc.
Just the other day I was running XP under vmware fusion in one monitor and watching some go2meeting video using windows media player 11 and in my other monitor I was just browsing sites in Safari, reading mail, and doing all of my other Mac stuff all at the same time.
There is also software available from parallels:
I have not used this software, but Parallels and VMWare are in hot competition with one another.
Anyway I just wanted to give you some background and tell you that you have some other options.

Your "providing copy of return" question
Actually, I think this would be a good topic for the Practice Management/Business Growth forum - it ties in with preparer penalties and preparer procedures in general. You mentioned in the discussion itself that the tax forum may not have been the right place for the question, so I hope you're amenable to having the question moved over to PM/BG - I'll do that shortly. You will still be able to get back to the discussion via the "my contributions" link at the top right of your screen.
Thanks,

Keith, Thanks for the Reference to IRC 6428 (c)
http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/html/uscode26/usc_sec_26_00006428----000-.html
Which points to TITLE 26 > Subtitle A > CHAPTER 1 > Subchapter A > PART IV > Subpart C > § 31 Tax withheld on wages
http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/html/uscode26/usc_sec_26_00000031----000-.html
If questioned by the IRS, I can point to IRC 6428(c) and ask how is the Stimulus different than getting a refund based on withholding.
I am surprised that no one posted that they have filed late 2008 taxes and were or were not questioned on the Stimulus.
For some reason, my post has disappeared from the Tax Question forum and is in something called Discussion Archives.
Thank you again! Regards, Snowbird Snowbird 00:42, 2 March 2011 (UTC)
Our conversation
Keith,
Seriously, thank you so much for our most recent conversation. Did you see the most recent post? Among all the anger and fear, you and I were called "adults"!
Best, Jessica
You're right
Hi Keith, you were right about that SEC vs. Citi case. I misread that article. Take care. CrowJD 12:43, 30 November 2011 (UTC)
End of the forum
You may have heard by now that the Tax Almanac ( www.taxalmanac.org ) web site forum is permanently closing its doors effective June 1. Perhaps you have seen the pink bombshell “Important Service Announcement” when logging in.
Long-time TA user ChrisV2 has volunteered to set up a new website where TA users may continue the discussion. The site is up and running now and has an active base of contributors.
We invite you to take a look www.taxprotalk.com and join your fellow TA refugees.
