TaxAlmanac
Hi, I see you've been a member of TaxAlmanac since June 2006 - welcome back!
A lot of things have changed since TA was first started - so here are some good links for refamiliarizing yourself with TaxAlmanac:
Code of Conduct, Policies, FAQ, and Hints and Tips on How to Search on TaxAlmanac.
Also, we now have individual user pages - called profiles - that can be accessed by the other users by clicking any username in a discussion. To get to yours, click your own name in a discussion, or up at the top center of your screen (or here: Profile). Questions from users who haven't provided any information on the profile are often ignored (and are subject to being moved to the DIY/consumer forum), so it is worth taking a minute to add a little info about your experience level/background as a tax professional. Select edit at the top of that page, replace the boilerplate with your info, and then click Save page.

Duplicate discussions
Hi, it appears that you posted two very similar discussions this morning. Since it can get very confusing if people start posting separately to the different discussions, especially in cases like this where you presented the facts a little differently each time, I will be deleting the discussion that doesn't yet have any responses. I'll post the content below in case you want to incorporate it into the active discussion.
Please let me know if you have questions about this action.

Your duplcate (now-deleted) discussion said:
How is the election made on the tax return?? I have searched the "yellow box" for "condemnation awards, involuntary conversions and everything else I can think of but cannot find specific reference to how the election is made. The Code says "Such election shall be made at such time and in such manner as the Secretary may by regulations prescribe".
Also, can part of the amount received be reinvested in year one of the deferral period and the balance in year 2 or 3 for different qualifing property as long as all the other tests are met?
Thanks in advance for any help."
Last minute addition to your discussion
Right after you posted, I realized I'd left out a key point - LTHB is only for purchases > 11/6/09 - see here. Just wanted to be sure you saw that your client has two problems, and not just the move-in problem. Trillium
