If you will notice some in the news media are referring to Japanese plants in general as "quake damaged". I don't think they are doing this on purpose, they are just following the leader.

That was not what the earliest media reports said. The earliest reports said that the plants developed problems because of the automatic shut-down. The automatic (unthinking) shutdowns caused a loss of electric power to the pumps. You could look at the Fuku plant after the quake and see that they were not obviously quake damaged.

They're damaged now because of the explosions (the inner containers don't seem to be damaged yet).

The BBC has also pointed out the irony that this could actually be a largely manmade problem.
