Can anyone clarify if the amount reported on Military W-2 in box 12 with Code Q (Nontaxable Combat Pay) is included in Box 1, Box 3,Box 5 and Box 16 amounts OR has it already been deducted from these amounts and presented ONLY for purposes of electing to be included for EIC computations ?
My belief is it HAS ALREADY been removed from Boxes 1,3,5 & 16 however I'm hopeful someone with more experience in this area can confirm or clarify this for me ASAP. Thanks, Robert |

Not sure why combat pay would be removed from boxes 3 and 5. |

Ok ... so what are you saying, that if the amounts in box 1,3,5 and 16 are the same it has NOT been deducted ?
If so, and combat pay is NONTAXABLE ... how then do we exclude it from taxable income on a 1040 ? |

Robert, I don't know for sure but thought that it worked as you suggest. I believe Riley is commenting on it being taxable for SS and medicare - notice his question was on box 3 and 5. |

If you have a wildly inaccurate W-2, better than trying to decipher the madness and hack together some return that you'd be ashamed to put a name on, just get a corrected W-2. I'm one of those people who thinks corrected W-2's are requested for stupid stuff all the time, but this wouldn't be stupid stuff.
Do you by chance have a final paystub for the person? |
