One of my doctor offices is getting ready to digitize their medical records. I have been asked how to apply for stimulus money for that. I believe the stimulus money was provided for in the 2009 tax legislation. But, I can't find how to apply for it. Does anyone know any details?

I just sent your question to my sister. She's married to a doctor and if there is a program like this, I'm sure my BIL knows about it.

Thanks. I believe it is going to be handled through Medicare/Medicaid, but still can't find exactly how to apply. Any info you get will be appreciated!

Mcthom,

Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT, is the one giving my $ away, you have to jump through some hoops, here is one software company that spells it out [1]

Check with your client's current software company?

Anyone know where to find information on how the receipt of this money is handled? My client received $18,000 from the government for going electronic with their medical records. Is this taxable income to them? So far, haven't been able to find much info on this. Thanks for the assistance!

I've seen a couple of these. Company selling the doc the hardware/software did the paperwork. No muss, no fuss...♫ I treated receipt as a rebate.

Thanks for the replies! In looking at the Chief Counsel Advice, it appears this is taxable income to my client, and they should be receiving a 1099 at year-end for this amount. Thanks again!

I don't think there's any question that it's taxable. Of course, there will be an offsetting deduction of some sort. Don't think rebate accounting will work here for a few reason. One being that the money came from someone unrelated to the supplier.
