Part Year and Non-Resident State Filing Information Only is useless in states that do not conform to the 1040 and often makes more work. I dread filling out returns where the client is a split year resident. I can do the damn things better in my head or on a spreadsheet. What is worse, the error message probably means you cannot efile. Why couldn't this have been a worksheet, like Married Joint vs Separate or Tax Planner? Hint Hint

What do others feel is the most useless feature of ProSeries Pro?

Well, how about having to hit the OK box after it tells you it printed something? Stupid. Capital S.

But that is not a 'feature' to help us; this is, and it has not improved since it came out last year.

I rather like the PY/NR worksheet...have had no trouble with it other than NY's desire to try taxing all wages regardless until you find the stupid form and overwrite a bunch of stuff.

1.) The difficulty in preparing a MFJ State return when one spouse lives in another state. For Michigan, it's a nightmare, and I don't think it's possible without a lot of overriding.

2.) JR - I agree completely. And then when you need to print another form for the same client, it's still asking if you want to correct the errors first (when there are no errors). This was a problem last year and is still a problem this year.

3.) Having to enter the date that the PINs were entered. How hard would it be for the program to automatically enter the current day's date?

I don't know if anyone else detests this as much as I do, and it's been a problem that I've complained about for 3 years and it still happens. I cannot for the life of me, look at the form on the screen with all those worksheets open, it is so confusing. Sometimes, I just want to see the form as it's going to print out and there's no way to do that (unless you preview and you can't make changes there). Invariably, you end up with some sort of grid/detail that you'll probably use, but I don't want to see it when I'm looking at the form. I do use the worksheets and I know for a fact that if you don't have them open sometimes that there is no way to figure out how to input something. That's bizarre! The thing, however, that I have complained about is that turning off the worksheets view causes PS to freeze up. I have learned over time to always, always, always hit save before I turn off the w/s view because I've had this happen too many times and have lost entire returns because of it. The first year I mentioned this I was told it had something to do with my computer. Okay, then why has it continued to happen and no one can tell me why or how to fix it. Has anyone else had this problem and how do you fix it? I finally had someone at PS tell me that they would put a suggestion in that would allow you to turn off the worksheet view as you go from form to form instead of having ot turn it off form by form.

Sorry to be so long-winded this morning, but here's another one. I quit exporting from QB two years ago because it never works well/right enough to mess with. I thought I would try again to export from the Fixed Assets to PS since I have a sale of all assets and didn't want to have to reinput into PS. The export is going to PS 2004 not 2006 and I can't figure out how to change this. Any ideas? Thank you.

I'm full of them today as they keep coming up to remind me. Why doesn't control arrow really work? Is there a way to go from asset to asset IN ORDER by using this feature? I've tried using it over and over and never know where I'm going to end up.

Deb - I agree with you . Same problem here in Indiana - have to override the heck out of the state returns, especially the county tax , when spouses have different states.

And I thoguht I was crazy when I keep getting messages to chech for errors, when there are none

Oh, yes, seems if you cancel a printing once, or decide to print the state separate from the Federal, you get the darned 'Be Sure to correct your errors' message. Or when you do a child and you get 'one error' and that is that you did not fill in the sales tax rate for some kid in kindergarten who is not going to itemize for fifteen years. But those are quirks. LJA makes one great point about the asset entry sheets; the control arrow works sometimes. Ditto Control-Tab to go back to the last form. Seems to me the F6 key would bring up the asset entry worksheet list but now it doesn't.

The most annoying thing I find is if you haven't entered the E-file date on the state return, it gives you an error message (MD is the one I mostly deal with for e-file). You then click okay and have to go to the error icon. Why not just take us right to the error?

The PY/NR resident worksheet proved to be a pain in my fanny this year with a client's son who went to college in another state. Of course, they made a little money, but the other state wanted to tax all his income, which included a summer job in MD. Several overrides and an hour later, I had fixed the problem.

This might sound stupid, but the other worthless PS feature: that calculator. It's too darn small to see. For years, I have been using it since my adding machine was on the other side of the desk. I just moved my adding machine yesterday, because I finally realized what was causing my back pain and pinched nerve in my neck. It was the constant moving forward to see the calculator. My wife says she is going out to buy the t-shirt that says, "I'm With Stupid."

Printing the Schedule C twice when I only need 1 for filing. I think there is a bug in the state part (keeps printing out the SCH C 1040 along with a State's filing copy.

Sure would be nice if the fixed assets on the Fed return would automatically flow to the FL county tangible tax return. Also, why do I have to TELL it to transfer from the tangible tax worksheet to the tangible tax return. Should do that automatically. I didn't go to the trouble of putting it there because I had nothing else to do!
