Maule's idea makes sense for financial statements. But there are many provisions in the tax law that consider cash flow as well as economic logic (Section 453). The payment(s) made for an asset, whether at purchase or on a loan, reduce the funds a taxpayer has for making income tax payments. So depreciation based on arbitrary lives seems to be the compromise needed for creating a situation that come close to being fair.
