So, ATA has cancelled all future flights. I'm so lucky, I have paid for four tickets on ATA from Honolulu to Phoenix in July. Has anyone else had this happen to them? Any chance other airlines will pick up the tickets? Any recommendations?

Yikes, and what bad timing. Hopefully, someone will step up & help out....my only experience has been with strikes where the other airlines would accept the other tickets.

Any chance of challenging the charge on the credit card? Some cards have some kinds of insurance for travel...maybe some help there? Good luck.

No travel insurance for us. I've been traveling for over 30 years and never needed it. Since we paid for the tickets in January, I'm not sure if we can still dispute the charges. I'll have to check that out if other options don't come up.

Natalie, you might check with Southwest Air. They are the managing company, if not the parent company. They maybe able to offer some assistance.

Good suggestion Action. Now I'll have to see how the scheduling goes.

Northwest just announced they are cutting back their fleets by 15 to 20 planes. Luckily that will happen after the summer busy season.

Southwest is taking care of their customers who also had part of the flight booked with ATA. Nothing about ATA-only customers.

We're also flying on Northwest for the second part of the trip. I can get tickets with them for $835. We originally paid about $350 for the ATA. Maybe we should all just take a slow boat to China.

I learned something very important today. We booked our tickets through ATA and were scheduled to take Northwest for half of the trip. Because the tickets originated with ATA, the entire ticket was considered an ATA ticket, even though we were also flying NWA. That means that the entire ticket was cancelled, not just the portion that we were to travel on ATA. That was a big eye opener when the woman at NWA said they were not going to honor any part of the trip.

Anyway, we're all set now. For another $2,026 our entire flight is on NWA with the same dates of travel we had scheduled. If another airline goes bankrupt, I can see how some people won't want to fly anymore. (One couple here was scheduled to travel back to Germany on Aloha and ATA! They're out $5,000.)

Guess what - another budget airline just went wheels up today. Wonder if we are going to look back at this in six-nine-twelve months as the proof of the recession (depression?) all the talking heads are denying.

Glad you're still able to take your trip - can you raise your rates on the returns you have left to do to cover the extra cash out of pocket?!?!? <grin>

Another one? Is that the Italian airline? The bigger airlines supposedly have a cash cushion that will last a while, at least through the summer. It sounds like a lot of this is related to the cost of fuel. And the Aloha crash was due to fares that were too low. It was cheaper to travel to another island than it was to take a taxi from Hawaii Kai to the air port!

There's been talk of increasing my rate. I don't actually do very many returns.
