Ms. Crundwell (a name out of Dickens but Rita has to go) did herself well. [ http://goingconcern.com/post/oh-look-dixon-illinois-fraud-way-bigger-everyone-thought]

Looks like a 20 year effort to obtain the $53 million (or so). So only about 5% of the annual budget disappeared; an immaterial amount!

I live about 100 miles from Dixon, don't even remember if this hit the local news. Remember, this is Illinois where the ex-governors personally make our license plates.

I swear this is the story I originally posted. I wonder if she started small and said to herself, 'these dopes don't even notice' or perhaps she was in bed with the lead auditor.

At which time all mysteries shall be explained.

I saw the story here: http://www.mahanyertl.com/mahanyertl/more-audit-fraud-tiny-illinois-town-loses-50-million/1791/ and they have a point: how could a town not realize money was missing.

She did plead "not guilty". The money went into the "Capital Improvement Fund" and she did make capital improvements in the town!

I am sure her investments must be on the town's balance sheet, although the labeling of the assets may be ambiguous.

They are known as the petunia town, perhaps the auditors thought expensive annuals were used?

"The alleged fraud was discovered last fall by the city clerk while filling in for Crundwell during her vacation. The clerk noticed the account with Crundwell’s name and brought it to the attention of Mayor James Burke, who has said he did not know it existed." Maybe one of her horses will win the Triple Crown and Dixon will get its money back that way.

I recall being taught a long time ago that one should be suspicious of employees who do not take vacations.

Long time ago, Abington Township PA had several tax collectors go the way of Embezzler City. Nothing like privatization.
