Surely you can help us wee preparers in convincing ProSeries to release to us their file.ext definitions...or maybe you have a source for them. Some are easy to figure out but others drive me crazy! Why are they so propriatory with them...I have no intention of misuse but would sure like to understand better what I am doing and where it is going.taxea

I really don't have access to this information. I suggest you contact ProSeries technical support to see if they have this data. What is it that you need this for? Thanks, - Tim Doyle, TaxAlmanac Moderator 15:34, 28 February 2006 (CST)

| Hi Tim
ProSeries tech support won't release the information. I would like to be able to print a hard copy of things like child care provider list and EIN list both by number and by name. This info has to be stored somewhere but I can't figure out where.

I honestly don't have access to that information as I came up through the Lacerte side, not the ProSeries side. While I could use contacts to potentially get the information, if support is not releasing that information, I wouldn't be able to either. The bigger issue here is what you're trying to accomplish. I have a feeling that even with the list of what files stored what information, it would do you no good. Typically, information is stored in a compressed format to save space or is encrypted for privacy purposes and wouldn't be something that you could access outside of the program. Have you made a request to ProSeries support to add the functionality to do the things that you're looking to do? It may be that the functionality is already in the program, or it could be that others also have a need to do the same thing. This may be a valuable program addition that hasn't been requested before. - Tim Doyle, TaxAlmanac Moderator 07:27, 3 March 2006 (CST)

| I believe you asked this question in the ProSeries discussion forum also. And why, I don't know. But I found the question curious, so in my spare time tried to guess what you are looking for :) and all I could find is a dat file in the common folder called ein.dat. I doubt that ProSeries would have a file that would list child care provider and ein because they don't keep a database; they do for W-2 info. I think that files storing info to be reused use the extension DAT. Does this help at all? | |

| I have repeatedly asked the techs to make these options available in the program but they won't do it unless they get numerous requests for it.
I must say that I have been successful in getting an option to search in the employer's file so time is not wasted by in-putting info that is already there. I ask every year for the option to search the child care provider and direct deposit files...yet to no avail....maybe someday if I keep on them. I guess no one else does, but I find having a hard-copy of these files handy since they don't come in to the form automatically when the EIN is entered.
