I amended a return for the FTHB credit for a client. He was asking how long can he expect to wait before receiving the refund. We mailed the amended return on 7/14/09.

A CPA friend of his said December.

Hi, Fred. This discussion says 5-6, 8-10, or 14 weeks: Refund Timeframe for amended return for FTHBC; my recollection of comments in other discussions is that it seems the trend is toward the long side, but some slip through...

Thanks Trillium, I put FTHB in the box and the discussion above did not appear. I def need to improve my search skills.

Thanks again.

Your right Fred. Seems to me it should come up with that search as well. Are there any tricks to searching, like using an * to find multiple items that might help us novice searchers?

The IRS just recently issued a statement that processing of amended returns has been extended to 12 to 16 weeks. According to them it is because of the high volume of amended returns.

I should add that they mention it is not necessary to contact them about this as they are processing the returns as quickly as possible.

Hey Dan, thanks. You have a link to that announcement somewhere?

Go Badgers - Hey WI, it would be awesome if that were the case. Intuit is great for providing this forum for us, but being a technology company, you'd think they'd have all the latest forum whistles.

Badger: lots of cool tricks to searching that may improve your search results, but nothing to overcome the fact that this search engine doesn't like to find "partial words" (so it wouldn't necessarily see the "FTHB" in "FTHBC"). It's also balky on words of three or fewer letters, and the ability to eliminate words/phrases from your searches by putting a minus in front seems to come and go (a mystery!). But best of luck, anyway, and thanks for trying. Also, I cheated on this one; I jumped to the FTHB recap and did a quick scan.

From IRS e-mail Issue 2009-34

7. Form 1040X Processing Time Extended

Because of higher than expected inventory levels of Form 1040X, Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return, the processing timeframe is temporarily extended to 12-16 weeks instead of the normal 8-12 weeks. It is not necessary to contact the IRS regarding the status of a return; returns are being processed as quickly as possible.
