| Looking for guidance. I've worked as full cycle accountant for small business in private industry for some time. As a cpa candidate, I really would like to fulfill my goal of obtaining certification. In Mich, for licensure, I need to fulfill a one year audit requirement.
I would prefer to work at a smaller firm so as to obtain more varied experience. Firms I've inquired of are not presently hiring, have laid off employees or don't perform audits. The economic downturn adds to the frustration. Any suggestions would be most appreciated. Thanks in advance!

| you dont have to have one year Audit experiance. as i understood MI requirments you have to have at lease one Audit and 4000 hours ( 2000 if you have masters in accounting) with public accounting experiance.
you can find a list of companies that will help you on the MIchCPAwebsite http://www.michcpa.org i hope i am correct as i am trying to get certified in MI too

| I was in a similar situation and I resolved to work at a big firm in their small biz division.
If I were you I would try to work in a firm of at least 15 - 20 professionals so the form is a quality type firm doing varied work. My motto is the bigger the better for your first year or two at least. Contacts I made at a big 4 firm back in 1986 to 1990 still pay dividends today. From co workers who are now CEO's, CFO's, fund managers to former clients.

| Small to midsize firms do not typically have the resources to train an auditor.
Large firms will send you to training, and you will work with a hierarchy. Some large firms ensure their tax people get the requisite attest experience in order to get certified also.

| Thanks everyone for the replies and suggestions. I'll keep up the search - printing resumes, writing cover letters, answering ads, and cold calling. I received positive feedback from a firm I visited today. That was refreshing for a change!
I've got to include larger firms that will be more likely to have audit work for me. I'll keep at it!

| Can you get licensed in another state? Florida requires only one year of accounting, tax, audit, or advisory experience as long as you were working under the supervision of a CPA. So audit is not required and the experience can be in public, private, or governmental accounting. There might be others like this. | |
